22 Nov 2010 NYSE Euronext Honors Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore A. Giunta visits the NYSE to commemorate his receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama on Tuesday, November 16. In honor of the occasion, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Salvatore A. Giunta rings The Opening BellSM. Background/Congressional Media of Honor: • The Medal of Honor is the United States militarys highest decoration for valor. • SSG Giunta is the first living service member from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars to be honored with the Medal of Honor. Seven others from these wars have received the award posthumously. He is also the first living service member since the Vietnam War to be so honored. • SSG Giunta was cited for saving members of his squad on October 25, 2007 during the War in Afghanistan. He was a rifle team leader in eastern Afghanistans Korengal Valley when his squad was split in two after an ambush by insurgents. While under fire, Giunta pulled a fellow soldier to cover and rescued another who was being dragged away by the enemy. • SSG Giunta was previously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among other medals. • SSG Giunta is 25 years old and is originally from Clinton, Iowa. He is visiting New York City for the first time. • There have been 3449 recipients of the Medal of Honor since the first Medal was awarded in March 1863. Today there are 87 Living Recipients of the Medal of Honor.
