China Unlikely to Back Sanctions After N. Korea Rocket Launch

After North Korea launched what it called a weather satellite into space today (Dec. 12), China pronounced the move regrettable. It also hinted it would not support a harsh international response. [Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman]: As a member of the United Nations, North Korea has an obligation to respect the rules of the relevant U.N.Security Council resolution. China believes the Security Councils response should be cautious and moderate, protect the overall peaceful and stable situation on the Korean peninsula, and avoid an escalation of the situation The Chinese regime is North Koreas biggest ally and trading partner, and has acted as a mediator between North Korea and countries like the US, South Korea, and Japan. Japan has called for a UN Security Council meeting to impose further sanctions on North Korea following the rocket launch. But analysts say the Chinese regime would likely push for negotiations instead. [Yan Xuetong, Dean, Institute of International Studies, Tsinghua University]: China will not support a policy of sanctions. Because in the past sanctions have not had any effect, and in the future they wont have any effect either. Yan Xuetong adds if China wants to maintain any influence over North Korea, it would want to avoid taking an adversarial approach. For Chinese citizens, reactions to the rocket launch were varied. [Shen Xiao Bing, White Collar Worker]: Anyone can launch a rocket for peaceful use, right? Especially the U.S., Western countries, they have no need to interfere with North Korea launching a satellite. [Ding Qian, Student from Zhejiang Province]: This can be a relatively big military threat and a sign of insecurity for the region. So personally I dont like that this has happened.
